In May 2003 John purchased his first digital camera, a Canon EOS 10D 6.3 Megapixel SLR. The 10D was a digital replacement for his previous film EOS cameras, but with many technical improvements typical of digital SLRs. He was able to utilize his previous lenses, but since the image sensor is somewhat smaller than 35mm film, it was necessary for him to purchase a new "normal" lense and a new zoom lens. Being able to take digital pictures directly obviously eliminated the step of having to scan negatives, slides and prints to "digitize" the photograph prior to editing and presentation for the web site. The 6.3 Megapixel sensor provided more than the necessary resolution for the web site and resulted in superior images compared to prior scans of source materials.
Pictures in this period were most taken locally with a few from an Alaskan cruise.
