This group of photographs includes the earliest works in the collection and is exclusively made up of black and white (B&W) pictures taken with both the medium format and 35mm cameras. There is some overlap but generally the medium format photographs are the earlier of the two. John began with B&W because of the ease of developing the film and making the prints, all using the Base's substantial darkroom facilities. B&W is also an excellent place to start learning about photography since it forces one to learn the fundamentals and to see things in a different light. B&W was also relatively easy to work with and manipulate in the darkroom. Various types of film and a variety of filters designed for B&W work were employed to take the pictures. To create the images here, where possible the negatives were scanned and then worked on in Photoshop. Where it was not possible to scan the negative, the original print (mostly 8 X 10 in size) was scanned instead prior to editing in Photoshop.
